Far Rockaway Skate Park
About Far Rockaway Skate Park
The Far Rockaway Skate Park is a significant component of the larger, mile-long Far Rockaway Park, redeveloped with a focus on resilient and playful design post-Hurricane Sandy. Designed by SITE Design Group and built by California Skateparks, the skatepark is situated within a landscape of sculpted hills, recalling giant sand dunes, providing a dynamic setting. The layout is open with great flow, encouraging creative lines and movement throughout the space, blending street and transition-style skating. It features a plaza section with various grind ledges, stairs, rails, and ledges, all with metal edges for smoother grinding. Notable obstacles include a six-stair set with a handrail, a multi-level middle ledge section with manual pads and euro-gaps, bowled corners, a transition area with rolled edges, a medium-sized volcano, a unique circular spine, and cement banks. The use of smooth concrete and metal-edged obstacles ensures durability and a high-quality skating experience. The park is an outdoor, concrete facility, approximately 15,700 to 16,000 square feet, and is currently open from dawn to dusk, permitting skateboards, scooters, and inline skates. It is part of a community-focused, environmentally conscious public park designed with sustainability and storm resilience in mind, featuring elevated landforms and native plantings.
