Southbank Undercroft
About Southbank Undercroft
The Southbank Undercroft is a globally significant skate space beneath Queen Elizabeth Hall at Southbank Centre in London. It was not originally designed as a skatepark; skaters appropriated the Brutalist undercroft in the early 1970s and it became one of the most iconic street-skating locations in the world. The terrain is famously raw and unforgiving, with crusty board-marked concrete, banks, ledges, pillars, and the well-known stair set. The site is all-weather due to the building overhang and functions as an active graffiti hub. The Long Live Southbank (LLSB) campaign successfully fought redevelopment plans that would have converted the space to retail, and a 2019 restoration reopened roughly 400 square meters including the historic small banks. As of 2026, Southbank Centre is marking a 50-year milestone with Skate 50 programming. The location remains free and public, with regular skateboard use plus BMX and inline activity, and constant tourist foot traffic along the Queen's Walk.
